Mallorca for couples is one of the easiest island holidays to get right — and one of the easiest to plan badly. Pick the wrong area, travel in the wrong month, or default to all-inclusive when you'd rather eat out locally, and the trip feels like a missed opportunity. We're hoo.travel — we help couples find direct hotel prices across the Balearic Islands, without OTA markup. This guide covers when to go, which area suits you, and how to plan the beach-and-mountains combination that makes Mallorca genuinely special.

When to Go to Mallorca as a Couple

September is the sweet spot for most couples. The sea is still warm — 24–25°C — but the peak-August crowds thin out noticeably after the first two weeks. Prices drop, restaurants are less rushed, and north Mallorca in particular starts to feel like it belongs to you again. If you're travelling for a special occasion — anniversary, babymoon, birthday — September gives you that feeling without paying August's premium.

October is worth serious consideration if hiking or dramatic scenery is part of the plan. The Serra de Tramuntana is at its most beautiful, the light is golden, and popular spots like Cap de Formentor are almost empty. It's still warm enough to swim in early October — sea temperature holds above 22°C. Some smaller beach bars and restaurants start closing towards the end of the month, so factor that in if you're going late.

August is peak season: beautiful, busy, and expensive. If it's your only window, book early — especially in north Mallorca, where the best couples' hotels fill up fast. Late June and early July are underrated: warm, fully open, and not yet at peak prices or crowds.

Where to Stay: The Best Areas for Couples

North Mallorca is where most couples end up, and for good reason: calm turquoise water, medieval towns to wander in the evenings, and the Tramuntana mountains right behind you. Here are the three areas worth knowing.

Alcudia

Alcudia is the most versatile base on the island for couples. The beach runs for kilometres — wide, sandy, and cleaner than most of the south — and the walled medieval old town is a short walk away for evening strolling and proper restaurants. You have both full AI resort options and smaller adults-only boutique properties here, which is a rare combination. Alua Boccaccio is a strong 5-star AI option (rated 4.3 from 2,000+ reviews) — prices were around 1,270 EUR / 6 nights in mid-September, checked 1 Jul. For something more boutique, Bordoy Mostatxins is adults-only and rated 4.9 — it came in at around 680 EUR / 4 nights in early October, checked 27 Jun.

Puerto Pollensa

Puerto Pollensa is smaller and more romantic than Alcudia. The famous pine-tree promenade (Passeig Saralegui) runs along a sheltered bay, there are good local restaurants and independent cafés, and the pace is noticeably calmer. It's a better fit for couples who plan to eat out in the evenings rather than stay on AI. Cabot Pollensa Park Spa is a solid 4-star with AI available (rated 4.1 from 3,000+ reviews) — around 990 EUR / 6 nights in late August, checked 1 Jul.

Port de Soller

Port de Soller has the most dramatic setting in north Mallorca: a ring of mountains behind a perfectly sheltered cove, with a vintage wooden tram connecting you to the village of Soller above. If you want scenery rather than a resort strip, this is the one. FERGUS Style Soller Beach is right on the bay — around 1,300 EUR / 5 nights with breakfast in early September, checked 26 Jun.

Beach AND Mountains — You Don't Have to Choose

One of Mallorca's biggest advantages over other Mediterranean islands is that the mountains and the beach are genuinely close. The Serra de Tramuntana — a UNESCO World Heritage range — runs along the entire northwest coast. From any of the north-coast bases above, you're 20–40 minutes from proper hiking and mountain scenery.

  • From Alcudia or Puerto Pollensa: Cap de Formentor is a 30-minute drive — dramatic limestone cliffs, a lighthouse, and views across to Menorca on a clear day. The road itself is worth the trip.
  • From Port de Soller: You can walk directly into the Tramuntana from the hotel. The GR221 long-distance trail passes through here, and there are shorter day walks with big views in under two hours.
  • For the whole island in one trip: Consider splitting your stay — two or three nights in the northwest (mountains and sheltered coves) followed by two or three nights on the east coast (Cala d'Or or Porto Cristo for quieter, more intimate beaches with a more local feel). It's a more active holiday but gives you a genuinely full picture of Mallorca.

A hire car makes all of this significantly easier. Book ahead in July and August when availability in north Mallorca gets tight — and aim for something small; the mountain roads are narrow.

Real Questions, Real Advice

First-time couple looking for all-inclusive in September with sightseeing options nearby

"We're heading to Mallorca for the first time this year and would love recommendations. We're looking for a hotel with all-inclusive, beautiful views and beach access — but also things to see nearby. Which area would you suggest for a first trip as a couple?"

Alcudia is a natural fit for a first visit. It combines one of the island's best sandy beaches with a walled medieval old town to explore in the evenings, and you're well placed for day trips — Cap de Formentor, the Tramuntana foothills, the inland market towns. For AI in September, Alua Boccaccio delivers a proper 5-star experience (rated 4.3 from 2,000+ reviews) with that option included — prices were around 1,270 EUR / 6 nights (14 Sep–20 Sep, checked 1 Jul).

Key insight: All-inclusive in Alcudia doesn't mean you're hotel-bound — the old town, the north coast and Cap de Formentor are all easily driveable on a day trip.

Couple wanting affordable all-inclusive in August at a hotel that's actually worth staying in

"Which area would you choose for a first time in Mallorca as a couple? Is there any chance of finding something reasonable in August on all-inclusive? We want to relax and not think about meals — but we also want to explore. The hotel needs to actually be nice, not just somewhere to sleep. Three-star or four-star prices right now are insane…"

Puerto Pollensa is the pick here. The bay is calm and beautiful, the pine-walk promenade is a pleasure in the evenings, and you're 10–15 minutes from Alcudia, Cap de Formentor and the Tramuntana — plenty to explore without crossing the island every day. Cabot Pollensa Park Spa is a proper 4-star with AI available (rated 4.1 from 3,000+ reviews), and came in at around 990 EUR / 6 nights in late August (24 Aug–30 Aug, checked 1 Jul).

Key insight: Puerto Pollensa sits at the calmer, more scenic end of the north coast — less commercial than Alcudia beach, with a better restaurant scene if you want to eat out some evenings.

10th anniversary surprise trip from the UK in October — adults-only, beach and mountains both wanted

"I'm planning a surprise 10th anniversary trip for my wife, flying from [city in the UK]. Long weekend in October. Budget around £2,000 all-in. We're both active — she loves relaxing by a beautiful pool or the sea, I love mountains, hiking and dramatic scenery. Looking for something romantic and stylish, not a family resort. Adults-only hotel preferred."

North Mallorca in October is exactly what you're describing. Your wife gets calm turquoise bays and great pools; you get the Serra de Tramuntana on the doorstep for proper hiking. Flights from Manchester to Palma are under 2.5 hours. Bordoy Mostatxins in Alcudia is a strong match — adults-only, rated 4.9, boutique feel — and came in at around 680 EUR / 4 nights in early October (7 Oct–11 Oct, checked 27 Jun). October is genuinely perfect timing: warm enough to swim, crowds long gone, and Alcudia old town has excellent restaurants for evenings.

Key insight: October in north Mallorca means 20°C+ days, near-empty beaches and full access to Tramuntana hiking trails — without August's heat or prices.

Couple who love beach and mountains wanting two bases to cover all of Mallorca in September

"We are travelling to Mallorca 7–12 September. We love the beach and the mountains. Any suggestions on two places to stay so we can see all the island has to offer?"

Port de Soller is the ideal first base — it sits right where the Tramuntana meets the sea, so you get mountain scenery and a sheltered beach from the same hotel. FERGUS Style Soller Beach came in at around 1,300 EUR / 5 nights with breakfast (7 Sep–12 Sep, checked 26 Jun). For a second base covering the east of the island, Cala d'Or offers a completely different atmosphere: small intimate coves, clearer water, a more local pace. Two nights northwest and three nights east fits the five-night window well.

Key insight: Port de Soller is the one place in Mallorca where you can hike in the Tramuntana in the morning and swim in a sheltered cove in the afternoon — from the same base.
