Menorca

Menorca is the second largest of Spain's Balearic Islands, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve celebrated for its pristine turquoise waters, unspoilt countryside, and remarkably well-preserved prehistoric heritage. Unlike its larger neighbour Mallorca, Menorca has deliberately limited high-rise development, resulting in an island where pine-fringed coves, wild headlands, and traditional whitewashed villages remain refreshingly authentic. The island divides naturally into two distinct geological zones: the rugged Tramuntana in the north, with its ancient dark rock and sheltered inlets, and the flat limestone Migjorn in the south, carved into dramatic cliffs, deep ravines, and long golden beaches. A 185-kilometre coastal path called the Cami de Cavalls encircles the entire island, connecting more than 80 beaches and offering some of the finest coastal hiking in the Mediterranean. Menorca's capital Mahon boasts one of the longest natural harbours in the world, lined with waterfront restaurants, Georgian townhouses, and a lively fish market. At the opposite end of the island, the former capital Ciutadella enchants visitors with its medieval cathedral, narrow Gothic streets, and a harbour framed by honey-coloured palaces. The island's interior is a patchwork of dry-stone walls, ancient olive groves, and traditional farmsteads producing the famous Mahon cheese, a tangy cow's milk variety with protected designation of origin. Menorca holds the highest concentration of prehistoric monuments in Europe, with over 1,500 sites including the iconic T-shaped taula stone altars and the massive talayotic watchtowers that dot the landscape. The island enjoys a warm Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine, yet the cooling Tramuntana wind from the north gives it a distinctly refreshing character compared to its southern Balearic neighbours. Menorca's culinary scene reflects its seafaring heritage: the celebrated caldereta de langosta, a rich lobster stew, is best enjoyed in the fishing port of Fornells. Pristine southern beaches such as Son Bou, Cala Galdana, and Son Saura draw sun-seekers, while the wilder northern coves of Cavalleria and Pregonda reward adventurous swimmers with crystal-clear solitude. The island's nightlife is deliberately low-key, favouring sunset bars, harbour-side dining, and stargazing over clubs and crowds. Annual festivals including the spectacular Sant Joan horse celebrations in Ciutadella offer visitors a window into Menorca's deeply rooted Catalan culture. Whether seeking a family beach holiday, a walking adventure along ancient coastal paths, or a gastronomic journey through one of the Mediterranean's best-kept secrets, Menorca delivers an experience that feels both timeless and genuinely unspoilt.
