Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura is the second largest Canary Island and the closest to the African coast, lying just 100 kilometres from Morocco across the strait. As the oldest island in the archipelago, formed over 20 million years ago, its landscape has been shaped into vast sandy plains, eroded volcanic peaks and over 150 beaches stretching along 326 kilometres of coastline. The entire island was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2009 in recognition of its extraordinary desert ecosystems, marine environments and endemic species. Constant northeast trade winds make Fuerteventura the undisputed windsurfing and kitesurfing capital of Europe, with the PWA World Windsurfing Championships held annually at Sotavento beach since 1986. The Parque Natural de Corralejo protects 2,668 hectares of golden sand dunes formed from crushed seashells, creating a landscape often compared to the Sahara. In the south, the Jandía Peninsula rises to 807 metres at Pico de la Zarza and shelters the wild, 12-kilometre Cofete beach on its windward side. Betancuria, founded in 1404 by the Norman conqueror Jean de Béthencourt, is the oldest town in the Canary Islands and preserves a cathedral and museum in a mountain valley setting. Fuerteventura's climate delivers over 300 days of sunshine annually with average temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees Celsius, making it a year-round destination for sun seekers. Hotels on Fuerteventura range from family-friendly all-inclusive resorts along the Jandía coast to boutique surf lodges in Corralejo and rural retreats in the volcanic interior. With over two million visitors each year, the island offers an unmatched combination of pristine beaches, world-class water sports and unspoiled natural landscapes.
