Cala Ferrera
Cala Ferrera is a small resort on the south-east coast of Majorca, in the municipality of Felanitx, immediately north of Cala d'Or. The cove is a narrow inlet of fine, pale sand, held between two low rocky headlands and backed by pines. A small islet, the Faralló de Cala Ferrera, sits just off the mouth of the bay. The water is shallow, sheltered and usually calm, turning a clear turquoise over the sand and darker over the rock ledges at either side. Those rocky edges make the cove one of the better snorkelling spots in the Cala d'Or area. The beach has a bar, showers, toilets, sunbeds and parasols, a volleyball net and lifeguard cover through the main season. Hotels and apartments stand directly behind the sand, so most of the accommodation here is within a few minutes' walk of the water. Cala Serena lies just east, Cala Esmeralda and Cala Gran just south, all linked by short coastal paths. The name is old and already appears on Cardinal Despuig's map of Majorca from 1785, although the resort itself was laid out in the 1970s. Santanyí and its Wednesday and Saturday markets, the Mondragó natural park and the harbour at Portocolom are all short drives away.
