Puerto Rico is a purpose-built holiday resort on Gran Canaria's sunny southwestern coast, developed in the late 1960s around a sheltered bay that creates some of the calmest and warmest swimming conditions on the island. The main beach features imported golden sand in a crescent-shaped cove protected from Atlantic swells, making it one of the most family-friendly bathing spots in the Canary Islands with consistently gentle waves and shallow entry. Just a short walk west lies Playa de Amadores, an artificial white-sand beach constructed in 2002 from imported crushed coral, spanning nearly 500 metres and widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in Gran Canaria. The modern marina at the heart of the resort accommodates luxury yachts and fishing boats, and serves as a departure point for dolphin and whale-watching excursions along the southwestern coast where cetacean sightings are frequent. Water sports are a major draw, with jet skiing, parasailing, snorkelling, kayaking and boat excursions available directly from the marina and beachfront operators throughout the season. Several shopping centres including Mogan Mall and Puerto Rico Shopping Center provide retail therapy, dining and entertainment, while the hillside apartment complexes above the beach enjoy panoramic ocean views. The resort sits in one of the statistically driest and sunniest corners of Gran Canaria, with average annual rainfall among the lowest in the Canary Islands and over 300 days of sunshine per year. Puerto Rico's geography of steep ravine walls rising on either side of the bay creates a natural sun trap, keeping temperatures consistently warm even in winter months when other parts of the island cool. The neighbouring village of Puerto de Mogan, known as the Little Venice of the Canaries, is a popular day trip just a few minutes west along the coast road or by regular boat service from the marina. With its sheltered beach, year-round sunshine, extensive water sports and family-oriented atmosphere, Puerto Rico has established itself as one of the most popular resort destinations in the southern half of Gran Canaria.
