Mahon

Mahon, known in Catalan as Mao, is the capital of Menorca and the easternmost city in Spain, built around one of the largest natural harbours in the world — a deep inlet stretching nearly six kilometres inland that has attracted seafarers, traders, and conquerors for millennia. Cultural attractions include the neoclassical church of Santa Maria with its monumental 19th-century organ, the Museu de Menorca in a former Franciscan convent, and the atmospheric Teatre Principal dating from 1829. The harbour's sheltered waters make it ideal for sailing, kayaking, and boat trips that reveal hidden coves, old military fortifications, and the tiny Illa del Rei — King's Island — with its 18th-century British naval hospital now being restored as a cultural centre. Mahon serves as the island's main transport hub, with the airport located just five kilometres south and regular ferry services to mainland Spain and Mallorca departing from the commercial port.
