Mahon

Mahon, known in Catalan as Mao, is the capital of Menorca and the easternmost city in Spain, built around one of the largest natural harbours in the world — a deep inlet stretching nearly six kilometres inland that has attracted seafarers, traders, and conquerors for millennia. The harbour's strategic importance brought successive waves of occupation by Phoenicians, Romans, Moors, and most notably the British, who ruled the island three times during the 18th century and left an enduring architectural legacy of sash windows, Georgian townhouses, and a taste for gin that persists to this day. The old town rises steeply from the waterfront, its narrow streets lined with colourful facades, independent shops, and traditional bars where locals gather for a morning cortado or an evening pomada — Menorca's signature gin and lemonade cocktail. The magnificent Placa de s'Esplanada serves as the city's main social hub, bordered by cafes, a daily flower market, and the imposing military barracks that recall Mahon's centuries as a contested naval prize. Below the old town, the Moll de Ponent and Moll de Llevant harbour promenades offer a spectacular waterfront walk past yacht clubs, fish restaurants, and the colourful traditional llauts — Menorcan fishing boats — bobbing in the sheltered waters. The city's covered fish market, Mercat des Claustre, housed in a beautiful former cloister, is one of the finest food markets in the Balearics, selling fresh seafood, local cheeses, charcuterie, and seasonal produce every morning. Mahon gives its name to mahonesa — mayonnaise — which according to local tradition was first created here by a French chef during the 18th-century occupation, using local olive oil and eggs. The nearby Xoriguer gin distillery, operating since the British era, offers tastings of its juniper-based spirit and the aromatic herbal liqueurs that are a Menorcan speciality. Cultural attractions include the neoclassical church of Santa Maria with its monumental 19th-century organ, the Museu de Menorca in a former Franciscan convent, and the atmospheric Teatre Principal dating from 1829. The harbour's sheltered waters make it ideal for sailing, kayaking, and boat trips that reveal hidden coves, old military fortifications, and the tiny Illa del Rei — King's Island — with its 18th-century British naval hospital now being restored as a cultural centre. Mahon serves as the island's main transport hub, with the airport located just five kilometres south and regular ferry services to mainland Spain and Mallorca departing from the commercial port. The city's restaurant scene ranges from traditional Menorcan taverns serving caldereta and fresh fish to innovative bistros and waterfront dining with spectacular sunset views across the harbour. From Mahon, the eastern coastline stretches south through a string of resort villages — Es Castell, S'Algar, Binibeca, and Punta Prima — each offering a different character and beach experience. Whether exploring its layered history, dining harbour-side as yachts glide past, or using it as a base to discover the island's quieter eastern shores, Mahon rewards visitors with a sophisticated yet unpretentious capital city experience.
