Maspalomas
Maspalomas occupies the southern tip of Gran Canaria, famous worldwide for its spectacular Dunas de Maspalomas, a 404-hectare protected natural reserve of golden sand dunes that stretch for six kilometres along the coast and resemble a miniature Saharan landscape. The Maspalomas lighthouse, Faro de Maspalomas, has stood at the island's southernmost point since 1890 and remains a beloved landmark that anchors the western end of the beach promenade connecting Maspalomas to the neighbouring resort of Playa del Ingles. The dune ecosystem encompasses three distinct habitats: the undulating dune field itself, a palm oasis known as El Oasis, and the Charca de Maspalomas, a brackish coastal lagoon that serves as an important resting point for migratory birds including herons, plovers and occasional flamingos. Playa de Maspalomas is a wide sweep of golden sand stretching 2.7 kilometres, backed by dunes rather than buildings, giving it a wild and natural character unique among Gran Canaria's resort beaches. The Meloneras district west of the lighthouse represents the newest and most upscale development, with luxury hotels, a landscaped seaside promenade and fine dining restaurants overlooking the Atlantic. Maspalomas is home to one of the oldest golf courses in the Canary Islands, the Campo de Golf de Maspalomas, designed in 1968, which threads through the landscape near the dune reserve. Camel rides through the dunes have become a classic tourist experience, while the flat terrain near the coast offers excellent cycling and running routes with guaranteed year-round sunshine. The area enjoys a hot, dry climate with average temperatures between 21 and 27 degrees Celsius, making it one of the warmest spots in Gran Canaria with summer peaks occasionally exceeding 35 degrees during Saharan calima episodes. Nearby attractions include the Palmitos Park botanical garden and zoo in a lush ravine, the Sioux City western theme park, and the Barranco de Fataga, known as the Valley of a Thousand Palms, which leads north into the mountainous interior. With its unique dune landscape, outstanding beach, upscale accommodation in Meloneras and proximity to the entertainment and shopping of Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas offers a compelling blend of natural beauty and resort convenience on Gran Canaria's sun-drenched southern coast.
