Es Pujols

Es Pujols is the main tourist village on Formentera, set on the north coast of the island a short way east of the port of La Savina. It belongs to the parish of Sant Ferran de ses Roques and had 806 residents at the 2022 census, just under seven per cent of the island's population. Its beach is a compact arc of pale sand between two low rocky points, shallow and sheltered, with the moored boats of the village drawn up at one end. Behind the sand a single promenade carries almost everything the village has: the restaurants, the bars, the hotels and the evening craft market that sets up along it through the summer. It is the closest Formentera comes to a resort, but the scale stays small, and nothing along the front rises far above the pines. Traditional wooden boathouses, the escars, still stand along parts of the shore, a reminder that this was a fishing settlement before it was anything else. The village makes an easy base for the rest of the island: La Savina and the ferries to Ibiza are about three kilometres west, Sant Francesc Xavier is a similar distance south, and the salt pans of the Ses Salines natural park lie immediately behind. From the shore the view runs across to Ibiza and to the islet of Espalmador in between. The village fiestas fall around 16 July in honour of the Virgen del Carmen, the patron of fishermen and of the village itself. Es Pujols suits visitors who want to be able to walk to dinner and a bar in the evening, on an island where most places require a bicycle or a car.
