Llubi

Llubi is a village of about two thousand six hundred people in the Pla de Mallorca, forty kilometres from Palma in the northern half of the island's interior. The old centre is built across two low hills with the torrent of Aumadra running between them, a watercourse that drains north into the wetlands of the Albufera de Muro, and the irregular ground gives the village steeper and more twisting streets than most of its neighbours. The name goes back to the Latin Castro-lupino, which became Castell Llubi and then simply Llubi, and the castell element is probably explained by the fortified talayotic settlement south of the village, enclosed by a cyclopean wall. For centuries this was a llogaret, a cluster of houses belonging to the town of Muro a few kilometres north, and only later became a municipality of its own. The patronal festival is Sant Feliu on 1 August. The village keeps a second round of celebrations at the hermitage of the Sant Crist del Remei, where after the religious part come children's games, communal paella, clay-pigeon shooting and ball de bot dancing. The traditional autumn fair falls on the first Tuesday after Saint Catherine's day, and since the year 2000 a Honey Fair has been held on the Sunday before it, devoted to local honey and everything made from it. There is a market every Tuesday in the Placa de la Carretera. Llubi is unusually well connected for a Pla village, with Muro, Inca, Sa Pobla and Sineu all a few minutes away and the Albufera nature reserve, the biggest wetland in the Balearics, immediately to the north. It is a good base for birdwatchers and for anyone who wants Alcudia's beaches twenty-five minutes off but not the resort that comes with them.
