Sant Joan Despí

Sant Joan Despí is a town of about 34,000 inhabitants in the Baix Llobregat comarca, on the left bank of the Llobregat river west of Barcelona. Its name is Old Catalan for "Saint John of the Pine". The town borders Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Just Desvern, Esplugues de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat and Sant Boi de Llobregat. The architect Josep Maria Jujol, the town's official architect from 1926, left several modernista buildings here, among them the Torre de la Creu of 1913, known as the "Torre dels Ous" for its egg-shaped domes, and Can Negre. The Barri Centre, the old core, is full of Art Deco buildings and keeps the church of Sant Joan Baptista and a small medieval chapel. Since 2006 the town has been home to the Ciutat Esportiva Joan Gamper, FC Barcelona's training ground and youth academy. In 2019 the club opened the Johan Cruyff Stadium next to it, home of FC Barcelona Femení and the club's reserve team. The main studios of the Catalan television channel TV3 are also in Sant Joan Despí. Central Barcelona is about 10 km to the east and Barcelona-El Prat Airport about 8 km to the south. Lodging is limited, mostly apartment hotels used by visitors to the FC Barcelona facilities and by travellers looking for a quieter base near Barcelona.
