Hotel Cuatro Naciones on La Rambla 40 is one of the oldest hotels in Barcelona, founded in 1706 by an Italian family and once the city's most luxurious address. Stendhal, George Sand and Chopin, Ulysses S. Grant, Buffalo Bill, Albert Einstein and Pirandello all stayed here, and the grand nineteenth-century staircase, coffered ceilings and the lounge hung with old photographs keep that history alive. Today it is a simple, well-kept two-star hotel with 54 rooms, from singles to doubles, twins, triples and family rooms, several of them with a balcony over La Rambla. Every room has air conditioning, a safe, a refrigerator, a flat-screen TV and free high-speed Wi-Fi, and breakfast is included in the rate. Reception is open around the clock, and the lift, luggage storage and a computer corner make the stay easy. The Gothic Quarter, Plaça Reial, the Liceu, the port and the Maremagnum are a few minutes' walk away, which suits travellers who want an affordable base with character in the heart of Barcelona.
