Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote, a compact and welcoming city on the island's south-east coast that serves as the main gateway for visitors arriving at the nearby airport. The city's centrepiece is the Charco de San Gines, a picturesque seawater lagoon surrounded by whitewashed fishermen's houses, redesigned by the legendary Canarian artist Cesar Manrique.
