Arrecife
Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote, a compact and welcoming city on the island's south-east coast that serves as the main gateway for visitors arriving at the nearby airport. The city's centrepiece is the Charco de San Gines, a picturesque seawater lagoon surrounded by whitewashed fishermen's houses, redesigned by the legendary Canarian artist Cesar Manrique. Playa del Reducto, the main urban beach, offers a wide stretch of golden sand beside a palm-lined promenade, perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, and windsurfing. The 16th-century Castillo de San Gabriel stands on a rocky islet connected to the city by the iconic Puente de las Bolas bridge and now houses the Museum of the History of Arrecife. Perched above Naos Bay, the Castillo de San Jose hosts the International Museum of Contemporary Art with works by Picasso, Miro, Chillida, and Tapies. Marina Lanzarote provides a modern waterfront setting with restaurants and bars overlooking the harbour, ideal for a relaxed meal by the sea. The city comes alive on market days, with a street market by the Charco on Wednesdays and Thursdays and a handicrafts market on Saturdays offering local Lanzarote products. Arrecife's restaurants showcase authentic Canarian cuisine, from fresh fish and seafood to traditional dishes served with mojo picon sauce. A Mediterranean-style promenade connects the beach, marina, and historic centre, making the city easy to explore on foot. With its blend of culture, history, beaches, and authentic island atmosphere, Arrecife offers a genuine alternative to the tourist resorts of southern Lanzarote.
