Central Lanzarote
Central Lanzarote is the island's administrative and cultural heart, stretching from the capital Arrecife and the resort of Costa Teguise on the east coast to the volcanic plains of Tinajo in the west. Arrecife, home to more than a third of the island's population, surrounds the Charco de San Ginés lagoon and guards its harbour with two historic castles, San Gabriel and San José, the latter housing the International Museum of Contemporary Art. César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport lies just a few kilometres away, which makes this the most convenient base for short stays. North of the capital, Costa Teguise is a family-friendly resort with four beaches, including the windsurfing bay of Las Cucharas and the sheltered Playa del Jablillo, as well as a golf course and an aquapark. Inland, Teguise was the capital of Lanzarote until 1847 and still preserves cobbled streets, colonial mansions and the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, and its Sunday market is the largest on the island. In Tahíche, the Fundación César Manrique occupies the artist's former home built over five volcanic bubbles, and in Mozaga his Monumento al Campesino pays tribute to the island's farmers. Masdache and the surrounding La Geria area produce the island's wine, with vines planted in hollows in the volcanic ash and protected from the wind by stone walls. To the west, Tinajo and Mancha Blanca are the northern gateway to Timanfaya National Park, and La Santa is known for its sports resort and the surf breaks on its reef. Accommodation ranges from beach hotels and apartments in Costa Teguise to city hotels in Arrecife and rural houses in the inland villages. With short transfers, easy access to both north and south and a genuine Canarian everyday life, Central Lanzarote suits families, first-time visitors and anyone planning to explore the whole island.
