The Canary Islands are a Spanish archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean, lying roughly 100 kilometres off the north-west coast of Africa. Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are the seven main islands, and little La Graciosa off Lanzarote is the eighth inhabited one. Together they form an autonomous community of Spain with two capitals, Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and more than two million residents. All of the islands are volcanic, and their landscapes range from the dunes and lava fields of the eastern islands to the laurel forests, pine woods and deep ravines of the west. Mount Teide on Tenerife, at 3,715 metres the highest peak in Spain, stands at the centre of one of the archipelago's four national parks, alongside Timanfaya on Lanzarote, Garajonay on La Gomera and the Caldera de Taburiente on La Palma. The subtropical climate, tempered by the trade winds and the ocean, keeps temperatures mild all year, which has made the islands Europe's classic winter-sun destination. More than 14 million visitors came in 2023, most of them to the big resorts of southern Tenerife, southern Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The western islands of La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro are much quieter, with small hotels, rural houses and hiking trails instead of large resorts. Every main island has its own airport, the larger ones with direct flights from across Europe, and ferries connect the islands with one another. From beach holidays and family resorts to volcano hikes, diving and stargazing, hotels in the Canary Islands suit every kind of trip.
