El Medano
El Medano is a laid-back coastal town on the southeastern tip of Tenerife, renowned as one of Europe's premier destinations for kitesurfing and windsurfing, having hosted several world championships in both disciplines. The town sits at the foot of Montana Roja, a striking 171-metre volcanic cone that forms part of the Montana Roja Special Nature Reserve and offers panoramic hiking trails overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria. Playa de El Medano stretches for nearly two kilometres of fine grey sand and is the longest natural beach on Tenerife, with the village end offering calm family-friendly waters while conditions become increasingly wild and wind-swept towards Montana Roja. Adjacent to the main beach lies Playa de la Tejita, a serene expanse of golden sand backed by the volcanic cone that remains one of the least developed and most beautiful beaches on the island. The town's oceanfront promenade is lined with surf shops, casual restaurants and cafes that reflect its authentic, uncommercialised character far removed from the mass tourism of the southern mega-resorts. A weekly market fills the central Plaza del Principe de Asturias with local produce, artisan crafts and street food, serving as the social heart of the community. El Medano enjoys some of the most consistent wind conditions in the Canary Islands, with reliable trade winds blowing throughout the summer months making it a magnet for water sports enthusiasts from around the world. The surrounding area offers access to excellent hiking trails through volcanic landscapes, including routes connecting to the Granadilla de Abona countryside and the foothills of Mount Teide. Despite its growing popularity among surfers and digital nomads, El Medano has preserved its authentic Canarian village atmosphere with traditional architecture, local fishermen and a genuinely relaxed pace of life. With its unique combination of world-class wind sports, dramatic volcanic scenery, unspoilt beaches and authentic local culture, El Medano represents one of Tenerife's most distinctive and appealing destinations for active travellers.
