La Aldea de San Nicolás
La Aldea de San Nicolás is a municipality on the remote west coast of Gran Canaria, about 71 km from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is the island's third-largest municipality by area, and its geography kept it isolated for centuries, shaping a strongly agricultural way of life. The fertile valley is known for its export tomatoes and also grows strawberries, bananas, papayas and avocados. Every 11 September the Fiesta del Charco revives an aboriginal fishing custom, with crowds jumping into a coastal lagoon. The beaches of La Aldea and the remote cove of Güigüí, reachable on foot or by boat, are among the wildest on the island. The municipality is surrounded by protected areas, including Tamadaba Natural Park and the Inagua and Güigüí nature reserves, all within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Nature tourism has grown here since 2010, with hiking trails through pine forests and deep ravines. A new road with nine tunnels and two viaducts is being built between Agaete and La Aldea, and part of it has been open since 2024. The GC-200 also links La Aldea with Mogán in the south along a scenic mountain road. La Aldea de San Nicolás suits hikers and travellers looking for unspoilt landscapes, local farming life and peace and quiet.
