Los Gigantes
Los Gigantes is a dramatic cliff-side resort on the west coast of Tenerife, named after the towering Acantilados de los Gigantes — colossal basalt sea cliffs that rise up to 800 metres vertically from the Atlantic Ocean. These spectacular formations, among the tallest sea cliffs in Europe, were known to the indigenous Guanche people as the Wall of Hell, marking what they believed to be the edge of the world. The resort's main beach, Playa de los Guios, sits at the very base of the cliffs, offering a unique experience of swimming on black volcanic sand beneath their immense shadow. Los Gigantes is one of the premier destinations in the Canary Islands for whale and dolphin watching, with boat trips departing daily from the small harbour to spot resident pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins, and occasionally sea turtles. The crystal-clear waters around the cliffs provide exceptional conditions for diving, snorkelling, kayaking, and paddleboarding, with rich marine biodiversity visible to a depth of 30 metres. A compact and pleasant town centre features a selection of restaurants, bars, and shops spread around the harbour and along the clifftop promenades with panoramic views across to the island of La Gomera. The resort is part of the municipality of Santiago del Teide and serves as a gateway to the Teno Rural Park, a protected natural area of dramatic gorges, ancient laurel forests, and the isolated village of Masca. Despite its dramatic scenery, Los Gigantes maintains a quieter and more mature atmosphere than the bustling south coast resorts, attracting visitors who appreciate nature and tranquillity. The nearby Archipengue Viewpoint in Puerto de Santiago offers one of the most spectacular perspectives of the cliffs, though they are best appreciated from the sea on a boat excursion. With its unique geological wonder, world-class marine wildlife encounters, excellent diving, and a relaxed village atmosphere, Los Gigantes is one of Tenerife's most unforgettable destinations.
