Morro Jable
Morro Jable is an authentic fishing town at the southern tip of Fuerteventura's Jandia peninsula, where whitewashed houses climb a hillside above a working harbour that has served local fishermen for centuries. A magnificent four-kilometre crescent of fine white sand stretches northward from the harbour along a landscaped seaside promenade, consistently ranked among Fuerteventura's finest beaches for its gentle waves and crystal-clear waters. The old town retains its traditional Canarian character with narrow streets, local fish restaurants and a lively weekly market on Thursdays that draws both residents and visitors. Morro Jable is the main departure point for the legendary Playa de Cofete, a wild twelve-kilometre Atlantic beach backed by the Jandia mountains and the mysterious Villa Winter, accessible via a dramatic dirt track over the mountain ridge. The town sits at the foot of Pico de la Zarza, Fuerteventura's highest peak at 807 metres, with a popular hiking trail starting from the resort area that rewards climbers with panoramic views across the entire peninsula. Ferry services operated by Fred Olsen and Naviera Armas connect Morro Jable to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, making it a convenient hub for island-hopping across the eastern Canaries. The surrounding Parque Natural de Jandia protects a unique ecosystem of endemic plants and birdlife, while the waters between Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria are rich in whales and dolphins, with boat excursions departing from the harbour. As the southernmost settlement on the island, Morro Jable enjoys the warmest and most sheltered microclimate on Fuerteventura, with slightly higher temperatures and less wind than the northern resorts. The name Morro Jable derives from the Arabic-influenced Canarian words for sand hill, reflecting the Berber heritage of the island's earliest settlers. Unlike purpose-built Costa Calma to the north, Morro Jable offers the rare combination of genuine village atmosphere, outstanding beach quality and gateway access to some of the most dramatic landscapes in all the Canary Islands.
