Taibique
Taibique is the main village of El Pinar, the youngest municipality of El Hierro, created in 2007 in the south of the island. It lies on the slopes below the great Canary pine forest that gives El Pinar its name, surrounded by traditional houses with planted plots. At its western end a viewpoint at about 911 metres looks over the pine-covered mountains, and the Tanajara viewpoint shows the villages and forests of this side of the island. A short walk away, the Hoya del Morcillo recreation area offers picnic tables, barbecues and the only campsite on El Hierro, in the shade of the pines. Further up, the Llanía trails lead through a fairy-tale laurel forest with centuries-old heather and moss. Down towards the coast the vegetation gives way to arid volcanic terrain, ending at the clear, sheltered cove of Tacorón with the Cueva del Diablo nearby. La Restinga, a fishing village and diving base at the southern tip, sits within the Punta de la Restinga - Mar de las Calmas marine reserve. The Sabinar, with its juniper trees twisted by the trade winds, is a short drive to the west. Taibique lies at the heart of many of the island's walking routes, with Valverde and Frontera reached by road. Taibique suits walkers, divers and nature lovers looking for a quiet base among pines and volcanic landscapes.
