Aguimes

Agüimes is a picturesque municipality in southeastern Gran Canaria whose beautifully restored old town is considered the best example of a traditional Canarian hill town on the island. Cobblestone streets wind past stone houses in different warm tones, with unexpected bronze sculptures scattered throughout the alleys, including a life-size camel that has become one of the town's most photographed landmarks. The imposing Church of San Sebastián, a masterpiece of Canarian Neoclassical architecture begun in 1796 and completed in 1940, anchors the historic centre alongside the charming Rosario Square. The Barranco de Guayadeque, classified as both a Natural Monument and a Resource of Cultural Interest, is one of Gran Canaria's most spectacular ravines, home to over 80 endemic plant species and remarkable cave dwellings where people have lived for hundreds of years. Within the ravine, visitors can dine in extraordinary cave restaurants literally carved into the cliff face, enjoying traditional Canarian dishes like watercress stew in one of the island's most unique settings. The coastal town of Arinaga offers world-class windsurfing conditions, hosting an important event on the PWA World Tour at nearby Pozo Izquierdo, while the El Cabrón marine reserve provides some of the best diving in the Canary Islands with caves, arches, and volcanic reefs teeming with subtropical species. The ancient village of Temisas sits amid dramatic Canarian palm groves and is home to the island's only olive groves producing local extra virgin olive oil. Historic Bocacangrejo salt flats have produced salt in Gran Canaria since the end of the 19th century and remain an evocative coastal landmark. The Temisas Astronomical Observatory takes advantage of the area's clear skies to offer stargazing events, while the Cuevas de la Audiencia provide historic cave systems with stunning views over the palm-filled valley. With a hot desert climate delivering year-round sunshine, Agüimes combines cultural richness, dramatic natural landscapes, and coastal adventure in one of Gran Canaria's most authentic and rewarding destinations.
