Vecindario

Vecindario is the main town of the municipality of Santa Lucía de Tirajana, in the south-east of Gran Canaria, and one of the most populous places on the island with around 80,000 inhabitants. It lies on the coastal plain between Agüimes and San Bartolomé de Tirajana, about 35 km south of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Its backbone is the Avenida de Canarias, a four-kilometre avenue lined with shops, cafés and restaurants that makes Vecindario one of the busiest shopping areas on the island. Large shopping centres such as Atlántico add cinemas, supermarkets and international brands. Gran Canaria Airport is roughly 12 km away, about a quarter of an hour by car along the GC-1 motorway, which makes the town a practical base for early flights and business trips. The resorts of Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas lie about 15 km to the south, and Global buses link Vecindario with the airport, the capital and the south coast. The nearest beaches are around four kilometres away, on the coast of the municipality, where Pozo Izquierdo is famous for its strong trade winds. Pozo Izquierdo hosts the Windsurfing World Cup every year and is home to the International Windsurfing Centre. Nearby, the salt pans of Tenefé and Pozo Izquierdo show the traditional production of sea salt, while inland the village of Santa Lucía and the Fortaleza de Ansite lead into the Tirajana ravine with its palm groves and Aboriginal caves. Vecindario suits business travellers, windsurfers, visitors in transit and anyone who prefers everyday Canarian town life to a resort.
