Caleta de Fuste is Fuerteventura's most convenient resort, located on the island's sheltered east coast just seven kilometres from the airport and ten minutes from the capital Puerto del Rosario. The resort takes its alternative name, El Castillo, from the Castillo de San Buenaventura, a circular stone watchtower built in 1743 by military engineer Claudio de L'Isle to defend the coastline against Barbary pirates, which still stands guard over the harbour today. The main beach occupies a natural horseshoe-shaped bay where a rocky reef and man-made breakwater create calm, shallow waters that are ideal for families with young children. Fuerteventura Golf Club sits at the heart of the resort, offering an 18-hole par-70 championship course with over 60 bunkers, three lakes and panoramic Atlantic Ocean views that hosted the 2004 Spanish Open. The marina at Puerto Castillo accommodates 110 berths and serves as the departure point for catamaran excursions, submarine tours, jet ski hire and diving trips to 18 local sites where angel sharks, rays and barracudas inhabit the volcanic reef. Two kilometres south along the coast, the Salinas del Carmen preserves a working 18th-century salt field with a museum and the skeleton of a Sei whale displayed on the shore. Centro Comercial El Castillo and the newer Centro Comercial Atlántico provide shopping, dining, a six-screen cinema and a bowling alley within walking distance of the beach. The resort's character is distinctly family-oriented and relaxed, offering a quieter alternative to Corralejo's nightlife-driven atmosphere in the north or the all-inclusive zones of Jandía in the south. An oceanfront promenade connects the beach, harbour, castle and commercial centres, lined with restaurants, apartment complexes and bars that come alive in the evenings without overwhelming noise. Hotels in Caleta de Fuste range from the expansive Barceló resort complex fronting the main beach to boutique aparthotels and self-catering residences popular with golfers and long-stay winter sun visitors.
