Central Fuerteventura is the island's administrative, historic and geographic heart, stretching from the capital Puerto del Rosario on the east coast to the ancient mountain village of Betancuria in the volcanic interior. Puerto del Rosario, originally called Puerto de Cabras and capital since 1860, today features an open-air sculpture park with over 100 works distributed across its streets, squares and waterfront promenade. Caleta de Fuste, just seven kilometres from the airport, is the region's main resort — a purpose-built family destination centred around a sheltered horseshoe bay with calm, shallow waters and an 18-hole par-70 golf course that hosted the 2004 Spanish Open. Betancuria was founded in 1404 by the Norman conqueror Jean de Béthencourt, making it the oldest settlement in the Canary Islands, and its whitewashed streets, parish church and archaeology museum sit in a lush valley surrounded by dramatic volcanic ridges. The municipality of Antigua preserves the island's windmill heritage at the Molino de Antigua, a restored 18th-century mill that now houses the Museo del Queso Majorero celebrating Fuerteventura's famous goat cheese. In Pájara, the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de Regla boasts a unique Aztec-inspired stone façade carved with serpents, suns and jaguars — believed to reflect New World influences brought back by returning merchants in the early 18th century. The fishing village of Ajuy harbours some of the oldest geological formations in the Canary Islands, with fossil caves containing Cretaceous-period sedimentary rock dating back 100 to 150 million years. At Vega de Río Palmas, the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Peña shelters a 15th-century French Gothic alabaster sculpture of the island's patron saint and draws an annual pilgrimage each September. The volcanic interior offers a raw landscape of malpais lava fields, hidden valleys and pre-Hispanic archaeological sites including the 45,000 square metre Atalayita settlement at Pozo Negro.
