Puerto del Rosario
Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura and the island's largest town, home to over forty-five thousand inhabitants on the eastern coast, just six kilometres from Fuerteventura Airport. Originally named Puerto de Cabras — Port of the Goats — the town was renamed in 1957 and has served as the island's administrative centre since 1860, when it replaced Antigua as the seat of government. The town is known as the Ciudad de las Esculturas, featuring over one hundred open-air sculptures distributed across its streets, squares and waterfront promenade, created by local and international artists since the inaugural International Sculpture Symposium in 2001. A busy commercial and cruise port provides ferry connections to Gran Canaria, Tenerife and La Palma with up to ten sailings per week, making Puerto del Rosario a gateway to the wider Canary Islands archipelago. Playa Blanca, a five-hundred-metre stretch of golden sand just south of the centre, and the sheltered urban Playa Chica in the heart of town offer convenient beach access without leaving the city. The Miguel de Unamuno House-Museum preserves original objects, photographs and manuscripts from the celebrated Spanish philosopher's period of political exile on the island in 1924, offering a unique window into both literary history and the Fuerteventura of a century ago. Shopping and leisure revolve around the pedestrianised Calle Primero de Mayo and the four-floor Las Rotondas shopping centre, which together provide a broad selection of retail, dining and entertainment options unusual for a Canary Island town of this size. The waterfront promenade connecting the port to the town centre is a popular spot for evening strolls, lined with terraces, cafés and several of the city's most striking sculptures set against views of the open Atlantic. The parish Church of Nuestra Señora del Rosario, completed in 1931, anchors the historic centre, while the nearby Ecomuseo La Alcogida in the village of Tefia showcases traditional Fuerteventuran rural architecture and crafts. Hotels and apartments in Puerto del Rosario offer a city-based alternative to the resort towns, appealing to business travellers, island explorers and anyone seeking an authentic Canarian urban experience at prices well below those of the tourist coast.
