Puerto del Rosario is the capital of Fuerteventura and the island's largest town, home to over forty-five thousand inhabitants on the eastern coast, just six kilometres from Fuerteventura Airport. Originally named Puerto de Cabras — Port of the Goats — the town was renamed in 1957 and has served as the island's administrative centre since 1860, when it replaced Antigua as the seat of government.
