La Matanza de Acentejo is a historic municipality on the northern coast of Tenerife whose name, meaning The Slaughter of Acentejo, commemorates the First Battle of Acentejo in 1494 when the indigenous Guanche warriors led by Mencey Bencomo and his brother Tinguaro inflicted the greatest defeat in the history of Spain's Atlantic expansion on the Castilian conquistadors. The town preserves this heritage through a large commemorative mural and historic landmarks including the San Antonio Abad Hermitage, considered one of the oldest temples on the island, and the El Salvador Parish Church rebuilt after 1936 featuring notable sculptures by the renowned artist Mariano Benlliure. Situated at an elevation of 425 metres, the municipality rises dramatically from the coast to its highest point at Lomo del Jugo at 1,589 metres, creating a landscape of dramatic volcanic terrain interspersed with fertile valleys and laurel forests. The coastline hides the charming El Caleton beach, an idyllic black sand cove formed by ancient lava flows that created a small inlet with natural rock pools of crystal-clear water, offering a secluded swimming spot away from the tourist crowds.
