Los Realejos
Los Realejos is a historic municipality on the northern coast of Tenerife covering 57 square kilometres in the fertile Orotava Valley, formed from the merger of the twin towns of Realejo de Arriba and Realejo de Abajo in the mid-20th century. The town holds a unique place in Canarian history as the site where the last Guanche chiefs signed the peace treaty with the Castilian conquerors in 1496, a legacy preserved in its squares and ancient chapels. The mother church of Apostol Santiago in Realejo Alto, referenced in historical texts from 1496, is considered the first Catholic church built in Tenerife and remains one of the municipality's most important monuments. Rambla de Castro is a spectacular 45-hectare protected natural area along the coast, featuring ancient Canary Island palm groves, dramatic cliff paths, the historic Hacienda de Castro, and hiking trails that descend from the heights to secluded rocky beaches. The coastline offers wild beaches including Playa de El Socorro, a popular surfing spot, and Playa de Los Roques, while the inland areas provide an extensive network of hiking trails and paragliding launch points with panoramic views over the valley to Mount Teide. Los Realejos is famous across Spain for its Cruces y Fuegos de Mayo festival held on the 2nd and 3rd of May, featuring over 300 decorated crosses and one of the largest fireworks displays in the Canary Islands that draws thousands of spectators each year. With around 80 local festivities annually, Los Realejos claims to hold more fiestas per square kilometre than any other municipality in the country, reflecting the deeply rooted traditions of its communities. The commercial hub of La Longuera connects the upper historic quarters with the coastal areas and provides modern amenities including shops, restaurants, and services for both residents and visitors. Mirador de La Corona offers one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in northern Tenerife, providing a sweeping panorama of the Orotava Valley, banana plantations, and the Atlantic coastline stretching towards Puerto de la Cruz. Los Realejos combines authentic Canarian heritage, unspoilt natural landscapes, and a vibrant festival calendar, making it an appealing destination for travellers seeking the real northern Tenerife beyond the main resort towns.
