Lajares
Lajares is a cosmopolitan inland village in the municipality of La Oliva in northern Fuerteventura, situated at a crossroads between Corralejo twelve kilometres to the east, El Cotillo ten minutes to the west and the wild beaches of Majanicho to the northeast. Originally a small agricultural hamlet of fewer than three hundred residents, Lajares has transformed into one of the island's most vibrant communities, now home to over three thousand people representing thirty-five nationalities who are drawn by the surf lifestyle, creative atmosphere and year-round sunshine. The village is the undisputed surf culture capital of Fuerteventura, with multiple surf schools, board rental shops and yoga studios lining its main street, and some of the Atlantic's best surf breaks at El Cotillo and Majanicho just a short drive away. Every Saturday morning from ten to two, the popular Lajares artisan market fills the village square with local art, handcrafted jewellery, ceramics, live music and DJ sets, creating a lively gathering point for residents and visitors alike. Two beautifully restored traditional windmills stand at the entrance to the village, once used for grinding gofio — the roasted grain staple of Canarian cuisine — and now serving as a photogenic landmark of Fuerteventura's agricultural heritage. The Calderón Hondo volcano rises just north of the village to 278 metres, its perfectly circular crater plunging 70 metres deep, accessible via a 4.6-kilometre circular trail that rewards hikers with sweeping views of Lanzarote, Isla de Lobos and the Corralejo dunes. Artisan workshops and creative studios thrive in Lajares, from traditional Canarian weaving at the Escuela de Artesanía Canaria to contemporary pottery and art galleries, reflecting the village's blend of island heritage and international bohemian influence. A growing number of restaurants and cafés cater to the village's international community, including surfer-run brunch spots, wine bars featuring Canarian vintages and live music venues that host regular evening performances. The surrounding landscape of volcanic malpais badlands, dry stone walls and sparse Canarian flora creates a raw, dramatic backdrop that attracts cyclists, trail runners and photographers seeking Fuerteventura's unspoilt interior. Hotels and villas in Lajares offer a tranquil inland alternative to the busy coastal resorts, providing a base from which to explore three of Fuerteventura's best beach zones — Corralejo, El Cotillo and Majanicho — all within a fifteen-minute drive.
