Los Silos
Los Silos is a charming town nestled on the northwestern coast of Tenerife, set against the dramatic backdrop of the Teno mountain massif, one of the island's most distinctive natural landscapes. The town takes its name from the three grain stores built here in the 15th century, a reminder of its agricultural heritage rooted in cereals, sugar cane and vineyards. Cobbled streets and traditional Canarian architecture lead to attractive plazas, with the 16th-century Church of Nuestra Senora de la Luz standing as the centrepiece, an elegant white building adorned with gothic arches that became the parish church in 1605. The surrounding countryside rises southward toward Monte del Agua, home to one of the best-preserved laurel forests on Tenerife, where ancient trails wind through moss-draped trees in an atmosphere of timeless tranquility. Hikers can follow spectacular routes such as the PR-TF 54 through Monte del Agua or the PR-TF 55 to El Palmar, traversing deep ravines, volcanic rock formations and dense subtropical woodland. The coastal path linking Los Silos to neighbouring Buenavista del Norte passes through banana plantations, intertidal rock pools and sites of geological interest, offering a gentler alternative for those who prefer seaside walks. A short stroll from the town centre leads to the beach area, notable for a striking whale skeleton installation, alongside a saltwater swimming pool complex and facilities for diving and fishing. Los Silos serves as a gateway to the remote mountain villages of Teno Alto and Masca, the latter widely considered the most beautiful village on Tenerife and the starting point for the famous Masca Gorge hike. The town hosts an internationally recognised puppet festival each December, transforming its streets and plazas into open-air stages and attracting performers from across Europe and Latin America. Far removed from the tourist resorts of the south, Los Silos offers visitors an authentic experience of rural Canarian life where agriculture, tradition and extraordinary natural beauty converge in one of Tenerife's most unspoiled corners.
