Punta del Hidalgo

Punta del Hidalgo is a remote and spectacularly positioned coastal village at the very northernmost tip of Tenerife, where the ancient Anaga mountains plunge dramatically into the Atlantic Ocean, creating a landscape of serrated green peaks, deep ravines and wild, surf-battered lava coastline. The village is best known for its Blue Flag natural seawater pools carved from volcanic rock, most notably the Charco Las Furnias, which offers sheltered swimming in crystal-clear waters with excellent snorkelling over a fascinating rocky seabed when the tide is low. An iconic modernist lighthouse, inaugurated in 1992, marks the island's most northerly promontory and has become one of Tenerife's most photographed landmarks, standing tall against a backdrop of crashing Atlantic waves and green mountain slopes. Punta del Hidalgo serves as a premier gateway to the UNESCO-designated Anaga Rural Park, with marked hiking trails departing directly from the village, including the celebrated route up through deep barrancos to the troglodyte hamlet of Chinamada, where cave dwellings are still inhabited today. The coastline between Punta del Hidalgo and neighbouring Bajamar offers a stunning seaside promenade popular with walkers and birdwatchers, passing through small natural pools, lava shelves and lookout points with sweeping Atlantic panoramas. Local restaurants along the waterfront serve the day's fresh catch straight from the village's small fishing harbour, with grilled vieja, calamares and papas arrugadas con mojo among the authentic Canarian specialities best enjoyed with ocean views. Despite its remote feel, the village lies within the municipality of San Cristobal de La Laguna, and the UNESCO World Heritage city itself is only a twenty-minute drive through the lush northern hills. Surfers and bodyboarders are drawn to the powerful Atlantic swells that break along the rocky coast, making Punta del Hidalgo one of the island's most respected surf spots outside the established southern breaks. The climate is greener and cooler than Tenerife's arid south, with the northeast trade winds nurturing the dense laurel forests of Anaga that begin just above the village. For travellers seeking wild coastal scenery, world-class hiking, authentic village life and an escape from mass tourism, Punta del Hidalgo is one of the most rewarding and unspoilt destinations in the entire Canary Islands.
