Tías

Tías is a town in the south of Lanzarote and the seat of the municipality of the same name, about 4 kilometres inland from the south coast and 10 kilometres west of the island's capital, Arrecife. Its white houses climb in terraces up the gentle slope of the Montaña Blanca volcanic cone, below the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. The municipality stretches down to the sea and includes Puerto del Carmen, Lanzarote's largest resort, where the island's first hotels opened in 1967, as well as the villages of Mácher, La Asomada, Conil, Masdache and Vega de Tegoyo on the edge of the La Geria wine country. About 21,600 people live in the municipality, some 6,000 of them in the town itself. The Portuguese writer José Saramago, winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Literature, settled in Tías in 1993, wrote Blindness and all his later novels here and died in the town in 2010. His home, A Casa José Saramago, is open to visitors, and a steel sculpture of an olive tree made from his initials stands at the roundabout leading to it. Tías suits travellers who want a quiet base among vineyards and volcanoes a few minutes above the beaches of Puerto del Carmen.
