Puerto Calero

Puerto Calero is a small, upmarket marina resort on the south coast of Lanzarote, just west of Puerto del Carmen and about ten kilometres from the airport. The marina began as the private project of businessman José Calero in the 1980s, and the first boats docked in 1989. Today it has 438 berths for boats from 8 to 80 metres, including a section for superyachts, making it one of the best-equipped marinas in the Canary Islands. The waterfront promenade is lined with restaurants, cafés and boutiques facing the yachts, and the atmosphere is calm and elegant rather than busy. Many boat trips leave from the marina, including catamaran excursions to the Papagayo beaches, sailing, sport fishing, diving and submarine tours. A coastal path of about three kilometres leads east to Puerto del Carmen, so the beaches, restaurants and nightlife of the island's largest resort are within walking distance. Puerto Calero has no large sandy beach of its own, and the pebble cove of Playa Quemada lies a few kilometres to the west. The surroundings are open and volcanic, with views across the sea to Fuerteventura and inland to the Los Ajaches hills, and the La Geria wine region is a short drive away. Accommodation is limited to a few high-end hotels and luxury villas, which keeps the resort quiet even in high season. Puerto Calero suits couples, sailors and travellers looking for a peaceful, stylish base in the south of Lanzarote with the livelier resorts close at hand.
