Hermigua is a lush green valley municipality in the northeast of La Gomera, set in a dramatic ravine whose terraced hillsides are covered with banana plantations, palm groves, and subtropical crops that make it the island's most fertile agricultural area. Originally settled by the Guanches who called it Mulagua, the valley developed around two historic centres — Valle Alto with the 16th-century Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo, and Valle Bajo with the 17th-century Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation — both preserving traditional Gomeran stone and timber architecture.
