Hermigua

Hermigua is a lush green valley municipality in the northeast of La Gomera, set in a dramatic ravine whose terraced hillsides are covered with banana plantations, palm groves, and subtropical crops that make it the island's most fertile agricultural area. Originally settled by the Guanches who called it Mulagua, the valley developed around two historic centres — Valle Alto with the 16th-century Dominican Convent of Santo Domingo, and Valle Bajo with the 17th-century Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation — both preserving traditional Gomeran stone and timber architecture. The iconic Roques de San Pedro, striking volcanic rock formations resembling a gateway, stand as one of the valley's most recognisable natural landmarks and offer a dramatic backdrop to the surrounding terraced farmland. Hermigua serves as a gateway to the ancient laurel forests of Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a network of hiking trails leading through one of the world's finest surviving examples of tertiary-era laurisilva cloud forest. The Molino de Gofio Los Telares is an open-air ethnographic museum featuring the island's last working hydropower gofio mill, a botanical garden of traditional crops, and workshops where artisans create pottery using aboriginal techniques. Playa de La Calera, the finest beach in northern La Gomera, offers calmer waters than the main strand, seasonal fresh fish served at a beachside bar, and clear-day views across the ocean to Mount Teide on neighbouring Tenerife. The historic Pescante de Hermigua, four concrete towers rising from the sea, are evocative remnants of a 1950s crane system once used to load bananas onto ships unable to dock in the rough Atlantic waters. Natural seawater pools along the coast provide safe bathing spots with spectacular ocean views, while El Chorro waterfall cascades through the verdant forest interior. Local restaurants like Las Chacaras and Tasca Telemaco serve authentic Gomeran cuisine including fresh catch of the day with traditional mojo sauces, orange-glazed rabbit, and locally produced cheeses. Surrounded by towering mountains and blessed with a temperate microclimate, Hermigua offers an authentic escape into La Gomera's unspoiled landscapes, where traditional farming, artisan culture, and world-class hiking converge in one of the Canary Islands' most enchanting valleys.
