Playa de Santiago is a small coastal town on the sunny south coast of La Gomera, split between the municipalities of Alajeró and San Sebastián. It grew up as a fishing village around its harbour, where a few boats still go out and fresh fish is served in the local restaurants. The old fish cannery that once tinned tuna and sardines closed long ago, and today the town lives quietly from tourism. Its beach is a sheltered stretch of pebbles and sand along the seafront, calm enough for swimming most of the year. Above the town rise the Lomada de Tecina, with a large hotel resort and its botanical gardens, and the Tecina golf course, whose eighteen holes look out over the Atlantic towards Tenerife. Playa de Santiago enjoys some of the driest and sunniest weather on the island, while the green ravines and the Garajonay National Park are a short drive inland. Walking trails climb from the coast through the barrancos to Alajeró and the island's high plateau, with wide views of the valley and the sea. La Gomera Airport lies only about three kilometres away, and the town is linked by road to San Sebastián and Valle Gran Rey. Its seafront promenade, small squares and terraces make for relaxed evenings by the harbour. Playa de Santiago suits travellers looking for sunshine, golf, walking and a peaceful seaside base away from the busier resorts.
