San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo, officially known as Sant Llorenç de Balàfia, is a tiny and enchanting hamlet nestled in the green hills of northern Ibiza within the municipality of Sant Joan de Labritja. The village is centred around a traditional whitewashed Ibizan church that dominates the landscape, accompanied by a small school and a couple of restaurants serving authentic local cuisine with panoramic views across the rugged island interior. Above the village lies the Can Pere Mosson Country Park, a wooded and hilly nature reserve crisscrossed with walking trails, picnic areas and elevated viewpoints that are popular with families and hikers exploring the quieter side of Ibiza. The nearby hamlet of Balàfia is one of the island's most remarkable historical settlements, a cluster of ancient houses and Moorish defence towers dating back centuries, built in a distinctive fortified architectural style unique to the Balearic Islands. San Lorenzo sits along the main road connecting Santa Eulalia del Rio with Sant Joan de Labritja, making it a convenient stopping point for travellers exploring the north of the island. The surrounding landscape is quintessentially rural Ibiza — terraced hillsides planted with fig, carob and almond trees interspersed with traditional stone-walled finca estates and fragrant pine forests. The famous Sant Joan Sunday market, one of the island's most authentic artisan markets with handmade crafts, live music and traditional dancing, takes place just a short drive north in the village of Sant Joan. From San Lorenzo, the dramatic northern coastline with its secluded coves including Cala Xarraca, Cala Benirrás and Portinatx is easily accessible within fifteen to twenty minutes by car. The area around San Lorenzo is increasingly sought after by visitors looking for authentic rural Ibiza experiences, from agrotourism stays in restored centuries-old fincas to cycling and horseback riding through the island's pastoral interior. The village retains a genuine sense of community and timeless charm that has largely disappeared from more developed parts of the island.
