Sant Joan de Labritja is the smallest and most unspoilt municipality on the island of Ibiza, occupying the mountainous and densely forested northern third of the island. The area encompasses some of Ibiza's most spectacular natural landscapes, from the dramatic clifftop headlands of Cap de Rubio and Es Amunts to the secluded sandy coves of Cala Xarraca, Cala Benirras and Portinatx. The hilltop village of Sant Joan retains an authentic rural character with its whitewashed church, traditional Ibizan houses and a popular Sunday farmers' market selling local produce, organic honey and artisan crafts. The scattered hamlets of Balansat, Sant Llorenç de Balafia and Sant Miquel each have their own parish churches dating back centuries, surrounded by ancient terraced hillsides planted with almond, fig and carob trees. The Cova de Can Marca, a spectacular cave system near the port of Sant Miquel, offers guided tours through illuminated underground chambers formed over one hundred thousand years ago. Hikers and mountain bikers will find an extensive network of trails through the Es Amunts protected landscape, where pine-clad ridges give way to panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the neighbouring island of Formentera on clear days. The northern coastline hosts some of Ibiza's most iconic sunset spots, particularly the beach of Benirras where Sunday drum circles have become a celebrated island tradition.
