Ibiza North & East

Ibiza North and East is the island's tranquil heartland, encompassing the lush green municipalities of Santa Eularia des Riu and Sant Joan de Labritja where traditional Ibizan village life continues largely unchanged amid pine-forested hills and terraced farmland. This region stretches from the family-friendly resort town of Santa Eulalia del Rio on the east coast, through the peaceful coves of Cala Llonga and Es Canar, up to the remote northern beaches of Portinatx, Cala Xarraca and Cala Benirras where Sunday drum circles have become a celebrated island tradition. Santa Eulalia del Rio is the only river town on the Balearic Islands, centred around a charming marina, a palm-lined seafront promenade and the hilltop church of Puig de Missa that offers panoramic views across the Mediterranean. The weekly hippy market at Es Canar, held every Wednesday since 1973, is one of the largest and most famous open-air markets in Europe, attracting thousands of visitors to browse handmade crafts, vintage clothing and artisan jewellery. The scattered hamlets of the interior — Santa Gertrudis, San Lorenzo, Sant Joan de Labritja — each retain their own distinct rural character with whitewashed village churches, traditional bars serving pa amb oli, and an emerging scene of boutique hotels, organic restaurants and wellness retreats. The northern coastline is part of the Es Amunts protected landscape, a dramatic stretch of forested cliffs, hidden coves and crystal-clear waters that remains Ibiza's last true wilderness, offering some of the best hiking, snorkelling and birdwatching on the island. Port de Sant Miguel provides sheltered swimming and access to the spectacular Cova de Can Marca cave system, while the nearby Hacienda Na Xamena perches on clifftops with views stretching to the Spanish mainland on clear days. The east coast between Santa Eulalia and Es Canar is particularly popular with families, offering calm shallow waters, a good selection of all-inclusive and apartment hotels, and easy access to water sports and boat excursions. The S'Albufera des Grau natural park and the fertile agricultural valley of Es Figueral add natural diversity to a region that represents the authentic, unhurried side of Ibiza far from the party reputation of the south and west. For travellers seeking peace, nature, family-friendly beaches and a genuine connection to Ibizan rural culture and gastronomy, the north and east of the island delivers an experience that feels like a different world from the clubs and crowds just thirty minutes to the south.
