Los Cancajos

Los Cancajos is a small beach resort on the east coast of La Palma, in the municipality of Breña Baja, a few kilometres south of the capital Santa Cruz de La Palma. It grew up around a bay of black volcanic sand, some 600 metres long, protected by breakwaters of volcanic rock that keep the water calm for most of the year. The clear, gentle sea makes it one of the island's favourite places for snorkelling and for first scuba dives, with small coves and rock pools along the shore. A palm-lined seafront promenade links the beach with apartment complexes, cafés, restaurants and a few hotels set on the low cliffs above the sea. The beach has showers, toilets, sun loungers and parasols for hire, parking and access for visitors with reduced mobility. La Palma Airport lies just a couple of kilometres to the south, which makes Los Cancajos the closest resort to the airport and a practical first or last stop on the island. Santa Cruz de La Palma, with its colonial old town, carved wooden balconies and harbour, is a short bus or car ride to the north. From here the laurel forest of Los Tilos, the volcanoes of the south and the Caldera de Taburiente National Park are all within reach on day trips by car. The climate is mild all year round, which has made the resort a popular winter-sun base on the island. With beachfront apartments and a few larger hotels, hotels in Los Cancajos suit couples, families and divers looking for a calm beach base close to the airport.
