Los Llanos de Aridane
Los Llanos de Aridane is the largest town on La Palma, set in the broad Aridane valley on the sunny west side of the island at around 340 metres above sea level. With some 20,000 inhabitants it is bigger than the capital Santa Cruz and the main centre for shops, cafés and restaurants on the west coast. Its heart is the Plaza de España, shaded by Indian laurel trees and royal palms brought from Cuba in the 19th century and overlooked by the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios. The streets of the centre double as an open-air museum, as the Ciudad en el Museo project has hung more than thirty works of contemporary art on the façades of the old town. Banana plantations cover the valley floor down to the coast, where the black-sand beach of Puerto Naos, part of the municipality, has a seafront promenade and a Blue Flag. Los Llanos is also the starting point of the walk up the Barranco de las Angustias into the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. In 2021 the lava flows of the Cumbre Vieja eruption reached the south of the municipality and buried neighbourhoods such as Todoque, a vivid reminder of the island's volcanic nature. The town is a practical base for the west of the island, with the harbour of Tazacorte, the El Time viewpoint and the national park visitor centre in El Paso a short drive away. La Palma Airport on the east coast is reached by car through the tunnel under the Cumbre, and buses link Los Llanos with Santa Cruz and the rest of the island. With apartments, small hotels and rural houses in and around the town, hotels in Los Llanos de Aridane suit hikers, families and travellers who want sunshine and everyday island life.
