Puntagorda
Puntagorda is the westernmost municipality of La Palma, in the north-west of the island, between the ravines of Izcagua and Garome and the slopes that climb towards the Caldera de Taburiente. It covers about 31 km² and has around 2,300 inhabitants, spread over hamlets such as El Pinar, Fagundo and El Roque and over isolated farmhouses at around 600-700 metres. Agriculture still shapes the landscape: almond trees, vineyards and wheat on dry land, and orchards that spread with irrigation in the 20th century. The farmers' market lets growers sell their fruit, vegetables, wine and pastries directly at weekends. In February the almond blossom festival celebrates the trees in flower that turn the hills white and pink. The church of San Mauro Abad and its parish house are listed as a Bien de Interés Cultural. On the coast, the sea-carved cliffs of the Costa de Hiscaguán, shared with Garafía, are a natural monument and home of the endangered Barbary falcon. Rural tourism has grown in recent years without displacing farming, and more than a quarter of the residents come from abroad. The Miraflores viewpoint looks out over the Atlantic, and the observatory of the Roque de los Muchachos is not far up the mountain. Puntagorda suits travellers who want peace, nature, hiking and starry skies in one of the quietest corners of the island, linked by bus to Los Llanos de Aridane.
