Breña Baja
Breña Baja is a small municipality on the east coast of La Palma, between the capital Santa Cruz de La Palma and Villa de Mazo, rising from the sea to green hillsides at around 300 metres. Its roughly 6,000 inhabitants live in villages such as San José, where the town hall stands, San Antonio, La Polvacera and El Socorro. On its coast lies Los Cancajos, the island's second-largest resort, with a sheltered black-sand beach, while the slopes inland are dotted with farms, gardens and rural houses. Part of La Palma Airport lies within the municipality, so most of Breña Baja is only a few minutes' drive from the terminal. From the Montaña de la Breña visitors enjoy one of the finest panoramas of the island's eastern side, over the coast and the capital. The villages keep many examples of traditional rural, religious and civil architecture, from whitewashed houses to small chapels and old estates. Santa Cruz de La Palma, with its colonial old town and harbour, is a short drive to the north, and the road through the tunnel under the Cumbre leads to the west of the island. Clear night skies make the area a starting point for stargazing outings, some of which set off from Los Cancajos. The mild climate lets gardens of mango, orange and tropical plants thrive around the houses all year. With villas, apartments, rural houses and the hotels of Los Cancajos, hotels in Breña Baja suit travellers who want a quiet base close to the airport, the beach and the capital.
