Santa Brígida is a town in the green highlands of north-eastern Gran Canaria, about 14 km from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria at an altitude of around 520 m. It is one of the smallest municipalities on the island, and its residents are known as "satauteños", after the pre-Hispanic settlement of Sataute. The Caldera de Bandama, an explosion crater about 1 km wide and 220 m deep, is one of its best-known natural sights. Next to the crater lies the Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas, founded by British residents in 1891 and the oldest golf club in Spain. The area of Monte Lentiscal belongs to the Gran Canaria wine designation, and the Casa Museo del Vino introduces visitors to local wines. A farmers' market is held in the old town at weekends, selling cheese, fruit and traditional sweets. In 1599 local militia defeated the Dutch admiral Van der Does here, an event still recalled in the town's coat of arms. The landscape is shaped by the Barranco Guiniguada, with walking trails through farmland, palm groves and villages. The town is a short drive from the capital and the north coast, and well placed for exploring the island's summits.
