Central Gran Canaria
Central Gran Canaria is the mountainous heart of the island, covering the summits and highlands of Tejeda, Artenara, Vega de San Mateo, Santa Brígida, Teror, Valleseco and Valsequillo, together with Fataga and Tunte in San Bartolomé de Tirajana. The land rises to about 1,956 m at Morro de la Agujereada, next to Pico de las Nieves, which was long considered the island's highest point. Roque Nublo, a basalt monolith about 80 m tall whose top stands at 1,813 m, and Roque Bentayga rise above the Caldera de Tejeda, one of the most photographed landscapes on the island. Tejeda belongs to the Most Beautiful Villages of Spain association and celebrates the almond blossom every February. Artenara, the highest municipal seat on the island, is known for its cave houses and for Risco Caído, a cave site inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage in 2019. Teror is a historic pilgrimage town with the Basílica de Nuestra Señora del Pino, carved wooden balconies and the island's busiest Sunday market. Vega de San Mateo hosts a popular weekend farmers' market, and Santa Brígida is known for the Caldera de Bandama crater and the oldest golf club in Spain. On the southern side of the mountains, the palm-lined village of Fataga and the municipal capital Tunte sit in deep ravines on the road from Maspalomas up to the summits. Hiking trails and demanding cycling climbs cross the whole area, much of which lies within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Accommodation is mainly rural houses, small country hotels and the Parador de Cruz de Tejeda, a quiet base within about an hour's drive of both Las Palmas and the southern beaches.
