Cruz de Tejeda
Cruz de Tejeda is a mountain pass and small settlement at the geographical heart of Gran Canaria, about 1,500 metres above sea level. It takes its name from the stone cross that marks the crossroads, one of the island's best-known landmarks. The viewpoint looks over the Caldera de Tejeda, a vast volcanic basin of ravines, ridges and pine forest. On clear days the volcanic rock spires of Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga rise above the landscape, and Mount Teide on Tenerife can appear on the horizon above the sea of clouds. The area lies within the Nublo Rural Park and the island's Risco Caído and Sacred Mountains, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Cruz de Tejeda is a hub for hikers: old royal paths lead from here to the village of Tejeda, to Roque Nublo and towards Gáldar. The second stage of the Gran Canaria Camino de Santiago ends here. The Parador de Cruz de Tejeda and a few country hotels and restaurants serve visitors at the pass. Public buses connect it with Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and there is a car park for drivers. It suits walkers, nature lovers and anyone looking for cool mountain air and wide views away from the coast.
