Tejeda

Tejeda is a mountain village in the centre of Gran Canaria, about 1,050 metres above sea level, and the main settlement of a highland municipality of some 1,800 inhabitants. It sits on the rim of the Caldera de Tejeda, a vast collapsed volcanic crater about 28 by 18 kilometres across and one of the few clear examples of its kind in the world. Its historic centre of cobbled streets and white houses with red-tiled roofs has earned it a place among the Most Beautiful Villages in Spain. Two iconic rocks rise above the village: Roque Nublo, the cloud rock that has become a symbol of the island, and Roque Bentayga, with Aboriginal caves and ritual sites. Since 2018 the Cultural Landscape of Risco Caído and the Sacred Mountains of Gran Canaria, which extends across Tejeda, Artenara, Agaete and Gáldar, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Every winter, around February, the almond trees of the area burst into pink and white blossom, celebrated with the Almond Blossom Festival with food stalls, crafts, music and Canarian folklore. The almonds also go into the village's renowned sweets, from marzipan to nougat. In the Plaza del Socorro, the Abraham Cárdenes Museum displays works by the Canarian sculptor born in Tejeda. A short drive up the road, the pass of Cruz de Tejeda at about 1,500 metres offers sweeping views over the caldera and is a starting point for hiking trails across the summits. Tejeda suits walkers, nature lovers and anyone looking for mountain air and traditional village life far from the coast.
