Son Bou

Son Bou is home to the longest beach on Menorca, an extraordinary two-and-a-half-kilometre sweep of golden sand stretching between dramatic limestone headlands on the island's southern coast. The beach slopes gently into warm, crystal-clear water, creating ideal conditions for families with children, while the eastern end transitions into a wilder, less-visited stretch popular with naturists. Behind the beach, the protected wetlands of the Prat de Son Bou form one of Menorca's most important ecosystems, a freshwater marsh and lagoon system that supports a rich variety of birdlife including herons, egrets, moorhens, and seasonal visitors such as flamingos and osprey. A wooden boardwalk winds through the reeds and tamarisk groves of the wetland, offering a peaceful nature walk just steps from the beach that reveals a surprisingly diverse wildlife habitat. At the eastern end of the beach stand the ruins of an Early Christian basilica dating from the 5th century, one of the most significant archaeological discoveries on the island. The resort area of Son Bou is concentrated at the western end of the beach, where several large hotel complexes and apartment blocks offer package holiday accommodation with direct beach access. The clifftop area above the western beach provides several restaurants and bars with panoramic views across the entire bay, particularly spectacular at sunset. Son Bou's central position on the southern coast makes it an excellent base for exploring both the eastern and western halves of the island, with Alaior just a few kilometres inland and both Mahon and Ciutadella reachable within thirty minutes. The Cami de Cavalls coastal path connects Son Bou to Santo Tomas to the west via a spectacular clifftop walk, and to Cala en Porter to the east through a landscape of ravines and hidden coves. Despite its popularity, Son Bou's sheer size means that there is always space to find a quiet spot, particularly on the eastern half of the beach where the dunes, wetlands, and ancient basilica create a setting of remarkable natural and historical beauty.
