Migjorn is the southern half of Menorca, a vast limestone platform formed during the Tertiary period that gives this part of the island its distinctive character of flat terrain, dramatic sea cliffs, deep ravines, and some of the longest and most beautiful beaches in the Balearic Islands. The geological contrast with the darker, more rugged Tramuntana to the north is immediately apparent: Migjorn's pale limestone creates brilliant white cliffs that plunge into waters of extraordinary turquoise intensity, while a network of barrancos — deep gorges carved by ancient rivers — cuts through the plateau from north to south, creating lush green corridors that open onto sheltered sandy coves at the coast.
