Santo Tomas
Santo Tomas, also written as Sant Tomas or San Tomas, is a tranquil beach resort on Menorca's southern coast, centred around a magnificent 600-metre stretch of fine golden sand that ranks among the most beautiful and least commercialised beaches on the island. The beach faces due south, ensuring maximum sunshine and warm, calm waters that gently shelve to a depth ideal for swimming and snorkelling, with a backdrop of low dunes and the protected wetlands of the Prat de Son Bou nature reserve. The resort itself is deliberately low-key, with a handful of hotels, apartment complexes, and beach bars set among gardens and pine groves, maintaining a peaceful atmosphere that attracts families, couples, and nature lovers seeking to escape the busier corners of Menorca. Behind the beach, the wetlands are home to a rich variety of birdlife including herons, egrets, and the occasional flamingo, making early morning and late afternoon walks along the boardwalk particularly rewarding for birdwatchers. The village of Es Migjorn Gran, a traditional Menorcan inland settlement with authentic restaurants and a weekly market, sits just a few kilometres north and is connected by a scenic road that winds through the barranco. Santo Tomas is connected by a coastal walking path to the neighbouring beach of Son Bou to the east, a spectacular clifftop hike that takes around forty-five minutes and offers breathtaking views along the southern coastline. To the west, the Cami de Cavalls leads to the wild and remote beach of Binigaus, accessible only on foot, where nudist bathing and pristine solitude await beyond the headland. The resort's few restaurants concentrate on fresh seafood and traditional Menorcan cuisine, with several offering beachfront terraces where guests dine with their feet practically in the sand. Santo Tomas's combination of a superb beach, protected natural surroundings, and a deliberately uncommercialised character makes it one of Menorca's most appealing destinations for travellers seeking genuine tranquillity on the southern coast.
