Cala Galdana

Cala Galdana, sometimes called Cala Santa Galdana, is widely considered the most beautiful beach on Menorca — a perfect horseshoe-shaped bay of fine white sand embraced by towering pine-covered limestone cliffs that plunge into water of an almost impossibly vivid turquoise. A deep barranco, the Barranc d'Algendar, winds down from the inland village of Ferreries through a lush green gorge to meet the sea at Cala Galdana, creating a dramatic natural amphitheatre that has captivated visitors for generations. The beach itself is well-served with facilities including sunbed hire, a beach bar, and a watersports centre offering kayaks, paddleboards, and glass-bottom boat trips, yet the natural beauty of the setting remains the overwhelming draw. From the western end of the beach, a spectacular coastal footpath leads in about twenty minutes to Cala Macarella and its tiny neighbour Macarelleta — twin coves of such extraordinary beauty that they have become the most photographed beaches in all of the Balearic Islands. The eastern clifftop path offers equally rewarding walking to Cala Mitjana and Cala Mitjaneta, secluded coves accessible only on foot where the crystal-clear water and complete absence of development create a sense of pristine Mediterranean wilderness. Several hotels and apartment complexes occupy the hillsides above the bay, offering balcony views down to the turquoise water that rank among the most coveted in Menorca. The resort has a small but varied selection of restaurants ranging from casual beachside dining to more refined clifftop establishments, with fresh seafood and paella the local specialities. Cala Galdana's sheltered south-facing position means the water is typically warmer and calmer than Menorca's northern beaches, and the bay's gentle gradient makes it exceptionally safe for children. The Barranc d'Algendar gorge behind the beach is a rewarding walking route in its own right, following the stream through a shaded canyon rich in endemic plants, freshwater turtles, and nesting birds of prey. Evening at Cala Galdana is magical, as the setting sun turns the limestone cliffs golden before slipping below the horizon, casting the entire bay in a warm amber light that lingers long into the Mediterranean twilight.
