Alaior is the third largest town on Menorca, a traditional inland settlement perched on a low hill in the centre of the island, renowned throughout the Balearics for its cheese production, artisan ice cream, and proximity to some of the island's most important prehistoric sites. The town's compact historic centre features a handsome parish church, narrow streets of whitewashed houses with green shutters, and a lively local atmosphere that remains largely untouched by tourism. Alaior is the home of La Payesa, one of the most respected producers of Queso de Mahon-Menorca, the tangy cow's milk cheese with protected designation of origin that has been made on the island for centuries. The town's ice cream tradition is equally celebrated, with several heladerias producing artisan gelato from local milk and seasonal fruits that draw visitors from across the island during the summer months. Just south of Alaior lies Torre d'en Galmes, one of the largest and best-preserved talayotic settlements in the Balearic Islands, with three monumental watchtowers, houses, water channels, and sacred enclosures spread across a hilltop with commanding views to the sea. The nearby taula enclosure of Torralba d'en Salort, with its perfectly preserved T-shaped ritual stone standing over four metres tall, is another must-visit archaeological site. Alaior sits equidistant between Mahon and Ciutadella on the main Me-1 road, making it a convenient base for exploring the entire island, with the southern beaches of Son Bou and Cala en Porter both reachable within fifteen minutes. The town hosts a vibrant weekly market and several traditional festivals throughout the year, including its own version of the Sant Llorenc horse celebrations that fill the streets with music and pageantry. The University of the Balearic Islands maintains a campus in Alaior, giving the town a year-round intellectual energy that adds to its cultural appeal.
