Arguineguín

Arguineguín is a coastal town and working fishing port in the municipality of Mogán, on the south-west coast of Gran Canaria. Its name is one of the oldest Canarian place names, already recorded in the 15th-century Norman chronicle Le Canarien. Every Tuesday morning the town hosts one of the island's best-known street markets, with more than 170 stalls selling clothes, souvenirs and Canarian produce. Fishing boats land tuna and bonito at the harbour every day, and the fishermen's guild restaurant serves fresh fish and limpets. The main beach, Las Marañuelas, has about 400 m of dark volcanic sand and calm water, and the beaches of La Lajilla and Anfi del Mar are nearby. Unlike the purpose-built resorts around it, Arguineguín has kept a strong local community and an everyday Canarian atmosphere. Boats run from the harbour along the coast to Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogán, which is about 15 km away. In July the Fiestas del Carmen bring a procession of decorated floats and a sea procession of fishing boats to Playa de Mogán. The town has its own exit (56) on the GC-1 motorway, about 40 minutes from Gran Canaria Airport. Arguineguín suits travellers who prefer local character, seafood and a calm promenade to busy resort life.
